In the title story, the main character falls desperately in love with one of a pair of sideshow Siamese Twins.

Unfortunately, the other sister hates the sight of him and the story traces the mans efforts to find a way to triumph over this terrible division. In THE FRENCH WHORE, a divorced father takes his son on a trip to Paris in order to overcome the growing distance between them. But even the excitement and romance of Paris are not enough to reach his bored, cynical young son - until on their last night before returning home they meet a young Parisian streetwalker. In CROSSING OVER, a husband has to face the consequences of hitting his wife and so repeating the pattern of his own fathers and mothers marriage.

In ONE BACK ROAD, a physically and emotionally wounded Viet Nam War veteran wanders the back roads searching for someplace to settle down. In the longest work in the collection, INDIAN SPRING, the narrator wanders up to Yosemite Park hoping that its beauty and splendor will heal his restless soul and give him something to believe in.Sometimes the characters find a way to connect, sometimes they do not.

But each of them comes to understand what it means to be divided.
